5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Applying to PA School

So you’ve got your sights set on becoming a PA—AWESOME! The path to PA school is filled with excitement, anticipation, and a fair amount of stress (hello, application season). But if I could rewind the clock and give my pre-PA self a few tips, here’s what I would say:

1. It’s Not Just About Your GPA

We all know GPA is important, but let’s be real: it’s not the only thing that matters. Sure, you need to meet certain academic requirements, but PA schools are looking for well-rounded applicants. Your volunteer work, clinical experience, leadership roles, and personal statement carry a lot of weight, too. Don’t let a less-than-perfect GPA derail your dreams—focus on building a strong, diverse application!

2. Experience Is King (But Don’t Get Lost in the Numbers Game)

Everyone talks about the number of patient care hours you need to get into PA school—500 hours, 1,000 hours, 2,000 hours... the list goes on. But here’s the thing: quality matters more than quantity. It’s not just about checking boxes—your experiences should show that you’re committed, compassionate, and prepared for the challenges of PA school. Focus on meaningful experiences, whether it’s as a CNA, EMT, volunteer, or shadowing a PA in a specialty that interests you.

3. Your Personal Statement Is Your Chance to Shine

You may have heard that your personal statement is the place where you can really show off your personality and passion. And it’s true! But here’s the catch: don’t use it to rehash your resume or just state what you’ve done—PA schools already have that information. Use your statement to share why you want to become a PA, what drives you, and how your unique experiences have prepared you for this path. Be authentic, be yourself, and let your story shine through!

4. Networking Is Key (But It Doesn’t Have to Be Awkward)

Networking can feel intimidating, but trust me—it’s a game-changer. Attend pre-PA events, reach out to current PA students or practicing PAs, and join online forums or Facebook groups. Having a network of people who’ve been through the process (or are going through it) can provide invaluable insights. Plus, having a few connections can come in handy when you’re looking for shadowing opportunities or letters of recommendation.

5. Don’t Expect to Have It All Figured Out

Here’s a little secret: No one has it all figured out, and that’s perfectly fine. PA school is a huge commitment, and the application process can feel overwhelming at times. There will be moments when you question whether you’re on the right path, whether you’re competitive enough, or whether you’re doing things “the right way.” Trust me, I’ve been there. But take a deep breath and remember—you’re not alone, and your journey is your own. Keep moving forward, one step at a time.

Takeaway: The road to PA school isn’t always smooth, but knowing these key things ahead of time will help you navigate it with confidence. Be patient with yourself, stay focused on your goals, and remember: you’ve got this.
